The history of Assamese community in Victoria, Australia goes back to as early as 1959. Since then, many Assamese have migrated to Victoria. Besides students from Assam seeking further education in various universities in Melbourne and neighbouring areas from time to time, today, the Australian Assamese community includes members from various ethnic groups from Assam and other parts of NE India. The community have slowly grown over the years and now boasts more than thirty families.

The community meets several times a year to celebrate Magh (Bhogali) Bihu, Bohag (Rongali) Bihu and other events.
